The engine house at James Nutter and Sons, Bancroft Shed, Barnoldswick, Lancashire, 1975-78. We see Stanley Graham at work, at rest and, with the Shiloh Spinners girls ever watchful, entertaining a visitor, retired GP John Wilfred Pickard. We see him on the roof in summer with his gang whitewashing the glass to keep the temperature down in the weaving shed. And we see him getting a haircut.
Then there's the thrice yearly event of "blowing off and blowing down" the boiler. On Good Friday, at Wakes and on Christmas Eve the boiler was emptied in preparation for maintenance. Charlie Sutton from Welldone and his inside man, Jim, would crawl into the narrow passages of the boiler's hot flues and shovel out its dust. In summer they'd also ready it for its annual inspection by Ron Ellerby, the man from the insurance company. We see Charlie and Jim ragged up and we see the engine sheeted. We also see fire-beater Paul Golding's hot seat.
